MPT Victor Jara, 2024
Out of Pluto assisted Rémy Le Forestier and the Maison Pour Tous Victor Jara to imagine and install the artwork Le Magnémotcycleur.
Listen to an extract (in french):
Here is a description of the work written by Anthony:
At the heart of critical questions about the information society and its ecological impact, the Magnémotcycleur highlights the temporary nature of knowledge at a time when there is talk of storing zeta-bytes (1 ZB = 1,000,000,000,000 GB) of digital data worldwide.
Starting with the choice of hardware, a tape cassette player from the 1990s. The reuse of objects considered obsolete reinforces the ecological dimension of the work.
The use of a technology based on physical principles rather than digital encoding underlines the short life cycle of modern programs and devices, which become obsolete or unusable more quickly.
But on the other hand, as the work grows richer with the audience, the cassette plays again and again and recordings pile up one after the other, the tape degrades and sound quality diminishes, until speech becomes barely comprehensible, like the erosion of landforms or the sedimentation of soil in nature.
The auto reverse function is used to loop the tape content, like propaganda messages broadcast endlessly. The analogy with the frenetic media world of the early 21st century doesn't end there: the recording process progressively overwrites previous messages, mimicking the way in which information is drowned out by its own overabundance in broadcasting spaces.
In the end, the Magnémotcycleur takes a step back from the life of information that overwhelms us today, showing it as analog material, malleable and vulnerable to natural mechanisms.
